This is mainly an FYI post. I shot an episode of Vox's Netflix show Explained, and wanted to give a heads up that it came out this week.
Also, a few people have already written to me about it, and so I wanted to say a bit for context.
I love what they did with this episode. It also attempts to bite off a lot in 30ish minutes. The subject matter is extremely charged, and inextricably tied to racism, classism, colonialism, ageism, sexism, and probably most other -isms. So even though I think overall the show is a fair distillation in a very short period of time, of course there's also a lot more to it. (e.g. we did a 3-hour interview, and you only heard a few sentences directly from it)
If you came away feeling like something there was inadequately mentioned, the arc of the episode is based on my book Cleanwhich took years to research and write, and goes into more depth. The topic felt like even too much for one book, and I struggled with cutting it down to 80,000 words. So, to further distill that into a half-hour show is an enormous challenge. But I hope people whose curiosity was piqued by the show might consider reading the book before abandoning soap or whatever. Lots of information in the episode is directly from the book, and all but one of the other interview subjects is featured in it. So if you like this, it should be of interest.
Also—because it's germane to the topic—we shot it a while ago, before all the celebrity no-showering news. And, for safety, everything was done remotely, so I was talking to producers who were on a laptop on a chair under the camera for the aforementioned three hours. Hence why I'm even more awkward than usual. And of course there was no hair/makeup, and no one told me I did such a bad job cutting my own hair. Everyone did a bad job. Let's not get judgmental about it now.
All that said, if you do watch it, hope you enjoy. Succession will be back soon.
